What is important in life, self-respect or family?

Family is incredibly important. We are born with these people in our lives and hopefully they have loved & cared for us over the years. We have built unbreakable bonds with these people. Relationships (ie family) are important—without relationships, we as humans we live very isolated, depressing lives. And isolation has been shown to be more deadly than obesity, cigarette smoking, and cancer. (See: Social isolation, loneliness could be greater threat to public health than obesity).

Self-respect is also incredibly important. You must honor yourself, your emotions, your desires, and know who you are and what you want out of life. Your family should also respect them. You will never see eye-to-eye 100% of the time with your family members; however, this is the moment when boundaries come into play & you learn to express your desires even if your family does not agree.

You should not have to choose between family & self-respect. If members of your family are disrespecting you, you can have conversations with them so that they understand these types of things are not unacceptable. If you need to distance yourself from some people in your family, do so. But you can still maintain your ties with those in your family who do respect you.

● If you don’t value yourself , then you will always be attracted to people who don’t value you either.

● Respect yourself enough to say “I deserve peace ” and walk away from people or things that prevent you from attaining it.
